Title: A Different Kind of Alien
Fandoms: Runaways, Doctor Who
Characters: Karolina, Tenth Doctor
Rating: PG
Summary: Instead of Xavin, another alien comes to earth to pick up Karolina
Now there she had it. That's what confessing you love and gayness and everything to your best friend got you.
"I'm such an idiot."
"Karolina." Nico looked worried.
"It's true! I thought I'd finally figured out who I was, but now I know I don't know anything."
"Maybe this is just something that girls go through back on... wherever you're from, you know?"
"My mom's from the same planet as me, and she was never like this. Face it, I'm not just an alien, I'm a freak."
"We're all freaks, K."
"You are not! I don't belong with you people, Nico... I don't belong anywhere! God, what am I supposed to do now?"
"That star..."
Was Nico talking about that stupid falling star again that had gotten Karolina into this mess in the first place?!
"If I could make a wish, I'd ask never to be born, okay?"
"No, that star..."
Nico was pointing at the sky now, so Karolina looked.
That star was no star at all.
It had, in fact, nothing in common with a star other than that it was in the sky.
It was a... something, and it drew nearer and nearer, and at some point Karolina was able to make out what it was.
She couldn't believe what she saw, though.
It looked like a flying telephone box. One of those you saw in British films, though this one was blue, not red.
The box drew nearer and nearer and then it kind of hovered for a moment, before it sat down next to the fountain.
A blue telephone box. Police Public Call Box, Karolina read. Out of the sky.
Okay, she was officially going mad!
"What's that?" Nico asked, and Karolina shrugged, and looked at it some more.
"Should we go and... open it? Maybe there's something inside that needs its ass kicked."
Karolina shrugged again, still staring. That thing had come from space. And as weird as that sounded, maybe whatever, whoever was in there was like her. Maybe...
Nico hat crossed half the distance between them and the blue box already when a door in the thing opened and a man stepped out.
A completely ordinary man.
Brown suit, short hair – okay, the shoes were maybe not completely ordinary, but – he looked human. Way more human than Karolina had hoped for.
"Who are you, and what do you want?" Nico demanded.
"Oh, hi there!" The man took a hand out of his trouser pocket and waved. "Could you tell me where I am, please?"
Nico just drew her brows together, so Karolina decided to be helpful: "Los Angeles. In the US. Erm, on earth."
"Earth! Earth's good. Wasn't quite sure, the old girl just whipped me off without a moment's notice." He patted the blue box. "No, wait - what year?"
"2005," Nico said.
"And who's the prime minister in England?"
Karolina looked at Nico, who looked back, puzzled.
Finally, Karolina shrugged. "How should we know?"
The man sighed. "Oh, well. Will have to figure out if we changed dimensions again later. Anyway! I'm the Doctor. And you are?"
"None of your business," Nico said.
"Did you just... come out of space?" Karolina asked.
"Well, yeah, I guess. Usually we're a bit more sneaky, but, well, the trip was kind of unexpected..."
"So, are you... an alien?"
"Me? Yep! I'm the Doctor, alien, and you are...?"
"Karolina," Karolina said. "Where are you from, Doctor?"
"Ah, far away planet, you'd never have heard of it so... blimey."
Karolina had taken off her bracelet, hoping against hope that he might recognize her, might tell her more, might... give her a place to belong.
As always when she revealed her true form, her skin sparkled in all colors of the rainbow and her hair did as well, floating in a great cloud of light and colors behind and around her.
"Blimey, you're from Majesdania!"
"You know what planet I'm from?"
"Planet? Oh, no, it's a star, a tiny little white dwarf - well, tiny as stars go, anyway, and it's beautiful in there. Bit hot, though."
"My parents lived in a star?"
"You tell me, Karolina. I just know where you're from, or at least, were you appear to be from."
"Well, that's more than I know..."
Nico waved her Staff of One in front of Karolina's face before pointing it at the Doctor.
"Hello? K? Creepy guy in a telephone boy appearing out of nowhere? We should do something!"
Karolina smiled at the Doctor. "Don't mind Nico. She's a bit high-strung at times. Comes from being the leader, I guess."
"I'm not--"
"So you know that star? You can... travel there?"
"Sure! In the blink of an eye, actually. Time and relative dimension and all that – it's a bit complicated. Do you want to come, take a look?"
"I couldn't! I've got... friends, and..."
"It won't take long. You can be back in five minutes, if you like."
"Five minutes?!"
"Well, it travels in space and time."
"I..."
"Karolina!" Nico interrupted her. "You can't seriously think about—"
"You know what," Karolina told the Doctor, "I'm coming with you. And then I'll decide about those five minutes."
She turned around to give Nico a tight hug. "I'm sorry, but... I have to figure out where I belong and who I am, and... stuff. Tell the others I'll be back in a moment. If I'm not there to do it myself."
Nico nodded, dumbstruck.
The Doctor beamed at Karolina as she stepped into his blue box.
"It's bigger on the inside!"
"Well, what did you expect? So— to Majesdania?"
"Yes please," Karolina said, smiling.
