okay, so why exactly do i get mails from lj informing me that i'm the owner of communities that i've been the owner of for *years*??

Because it's a designated rank now with extra rights, I think. I read it somewhere... probably in their news-LJ. ^^

It's livejournal. It does weird things every now and then. Like... eating comments. Not sending notifications. Sending notifications twice. And such stuff.

My thoughts exactly. Coincidentally it was for two communities that have been rather inactive for over two years so I thought it was maybe a nudge to do something about it but then I realised that I have communities that haven't been updated even longer so... I don't know. I ignore it.

Because there were no owners before, only maintainers. And some communities have several maintainers, who all have the same rights. LJ is just clearing things up now, so that owners have more rights.
